Ingredients and spices that need to be Prepare to make Dal fry (with chana dal):

  1. For boiling chana dal you will need
  2. 1 cup chana dal (washed, soaked overnight preferably)
  3. to taste Salt
  4. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  5. 1 bay leaf
  6. as required Few black peppercorns
  7. 1 cardamom
  8. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  9. 1 Small cinnamon
  10. 2 cloves
  11. as per taste hing
  12. as required oil
  13. as required Water
  14. For making chana dal dal fry you will need
  15. as required Flavoured boiled chana dal
  16. 1 tbsp oil
  17. 1 onion
  18. 1-2 fresh green chillies
  19. 1 tomato
  20. as needed Salt
  21. 1/4 th tsp turmeric powder
  22. 1/2 tbsp coriander powder
  23. 1 tsp cumin powder
  24. 1 tsp heaped ginger - garlic paste
  25. 1 tsp curry powder
  26. 1/2 tsp garam masala
  27. 1/2 tsp Kasuri methi
  28. For double tadka
  29. 1/2 tsp ghee
  30. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  31. 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  32. 1-2 dry red chillies
  33. as required Water to adjust consistency
  34. Include chopped cloves of garlic in both the tempering stages
  35. My kids don't like it so I haven't included

Instructions to make to make Dal fry (with chana dal)

  1. In a pressure cooker, take soaked chana dal. Add salt, turmeric, hing, few drops of oil, above-mentioned whole spices and water.
    Pressure cook this for 4 whistles. Let it cool down and release pressure. Keep aside.
  2. Now take a kadhai. Heat oil. Put chopped onion and fresh green chillies.
  3. Saute for sometime. Next add chopped tomato.
    Add in salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder and cumin powder.
    Mix well and saute for sometime.
    Next add freshly prepared ginger garlic paste.
  4. Mix and saute till the masala is cooked and all rawness is lost.
    You get a superb aroma. Now into this cooked masala, add boiled and flavoured chana dal.
  5. Mix well. Keep flame slow and let it cook so that all flavours combine well with each other.
    Now add curry powder and mix. Next add garam masala and mix.
    As you see it nicely cooked, bubbling... crush some Kasuri methi and add it. Mix well.
    Now switch the flame off and cover the dal.
    After sometime,give a gentle mix and transfer the dal into the serving dish.
  6. Next...prepare for double tadka.
    Place a kadhai/ tadka pan. Heat ghee. Splutter cumin seeds. Switch the flame off. Now put red chilli powder and dry red chillies as per your taste.
    Put the aromatic tadka into the dal and immediately cover it with a lid.
    Do not disturb!!
    While serving mix and serve...
    It's just wow!!
    Serve it with rice/ roti/ paratha/zeera rice
